What we’re calling for
Extend the consultation period
The report the council has provided insufficient detail to inform genuine consultation and engagement with the community.
The duration of the consultation is inappropriate for a proposed change of this significance.
Our immediate ask is to extend the duration of the consultation for a minimum of three months with a view to extending this if needed.
Deeper, more meaningful consultation
We also request more information and deeper consultation with the community.
The International Association of Public Participation (IAPC) sets the standard for what is considered to be good practice when it comes to engaging communities and stakeholders.
The Department of Planning’s Community engagement toolkit for planning, is designed to support local governments to engage with communities. It recommends that councils adopt an ‘involve/collaborate’ level of engagement with communities when proposing a change of this scale. This is consistent with the IAPC best pratice methodology.
This includes engagement mechanisms such as community reference groups and citizens’ panels.
The current level of consultation offered by Council is insufficient. This does not honour or respect the community and the contributions we can and want to make to our futures.
